THE MODERN SCENE.

THE MODERN SCENE CHANGES AS FAST AS THE CALENDAR TICKS OVER; HISTORY BEGAN YESTERDAY. I BEGAN PUTTING PICTURES ON THIS PAGE ON 26th JUNE 2011, AT WHICH TIME MELTON STATION WAS BEING GIVEN A MAJOR FACELIFT BY NETWORK RAIL. THE NEW OFFICES OF MELTON COUNCIL WERE UNDER CONSTRUCTION ON THE OLD GOODS YARD AT THIS TIME, AND THE WHOLE AREA OF MELTON IS BEING REJUVINATED. AT THE STATION, THE SPAN OF THE FOOTBRIDGE WAS REPLACED IN A VERY SYMPATHETIC MANNER, THE CANOPIES WERE REGLAZED, THE WHOLE STATION WAS PAINTED IN AN ATTRACTIVE DARK BLUE, THE PLATFORMS WERE RESURFACED AND THE RAMPS AT THE PETERBGOROUGH END REBUILT.

LOWER DOWN THE PAGE ARE FOUR PICTURES TAKEN ON 11th SEPTEMBER 2012 TAKEN WHEN ALL THE WORK HAD BEEN COMPLETED.

IF YOU SEE FREIGHT TRAIN NOWADAYS IT IS PRETTY CERTAIN IT WILL HAVE A '66' ON THE FRONT! FREIGHTLINER 66529 POWERS THROUGH MELTON ON A CEMENT TRAIN AT AROUND 70mph.  24/6/11

MODERN

STOPPING PASSENGER TRAINS ARE NEARLY ALWAYS A '170' DIESEL UNIT, IN THIS CASE THREE CARS. VARIETY COMES WHEN THE LINE IS USED FOR DIVERSIONS WHEN WORK IS BEING DONE IN THE LEICESTER AREA.  24/6/11

MODERN

THE STATION IS BEING REFURBISHED BY NETWORK RAIL; NEW PAINTWORK, RESURFACED PLATFORMS AND A MAKEOVER FOR THE 1871 CANOPIES.  24/6/11

THE FOOTBRIDGE HAS RECEIVED A NEW SPAN BUT THE SECTIONS AT EACH END ARE THE REFURBISHED ORIGINALS. YOU HAVE TO LOOK CLOSELY TO SEE THAT THE SPAN ISN'T THE ORIGINAL; IT FOLLOWS THE DESIGN CLOSELY AND IT EVEN HAS DUMMY RIVET HEADS TO MAKE IT LOOK VICTORIAN!

THE LOADING DOCK IS THE BASE FOR THE WORKERS REFURBISHING THE STATION.

MODERN

THE PLATFORM RAMPS AT THE ROAD BRIDGE END HAVE BEEN REPLACED, PRESUMABLY TO MAKE IT EASIER TO CROSS THE LINE FOR DISABLED PEOPLE.

MODERN

THE GOODS YARD RETAINS THREE SIDINGS BUT THE ONLY USE MADE OF THEM IS FOR TRACK VEHICLES AS SEEN HERE. THE SIGNAL BOX IS BEGINNING TO LEAN VERY SLIGHTLY TOWARDS THE TRACK.  24/6/11

MODERN

HERE IS THE REASON FOR ALL THE NEW WORK; ON THE OLD GOODS YARD NEW OFFICES FOR MELTON BOROUGH COUNCIL ARE BEING BUILT, AND THE WHOLE AREA ID BEING REJUVINATED. THE SIDING IN THE FOREGROUND STILL RUNS INTO THE PEDIGREE FACTORY, BUT IT IS UNLIKELY EVER TO BE USED AGAIN.    24/6/11

THESE FOUR PICTURES WERE TAKEN AT 1.30pm ON SEPTEMBER 11th 2012

THAT MATURE WOODLAND BEHIND THE TRAIN USED TO BE SIDINGS!

SEP 3

THE COUNCIL OFFICES ARE NOW FULLY OPEN. COMPARE THE BUSY CAR PARK WITH THE VIEWS FROM THE 1970's - AND IT WAS FREE TO PARK IN THOSE DAYS TOO!

SEP 4

THE STATION APPROACH ROAD WITH THE COUNCIL OFFICES ON THE LEFT. THE SIDING ONCE RAN INTO THE PEDIGREE FACTORY BUT IT HAS BEEN DISUSED SINCE THE 1980's.

THE MODERN SCENE BEYOND THE CONFINES OF THE STATION.

MODERN

BETWEEN DALBY ROAD AND LEICESTER ROAD VBRIDGES A FOOT CROSSING CONNECTED TWO HOUSING ESTATES BUT ONCE WAS FOR A FOOTPATH ACROSS OPEN FIELDS. A METAL FOOTBRIDGE WAS BUILT TO REPLACE THE FOOT CROSSING DURING 2014.

A 170 CLASS UNIT APPROACHES MELTON STATION FROM LEICESTER AT 13.35 ON 27/6/11. THE UGLY LINESIDE FENCING SEEMS TO BE EVERYWHERE THESE DAYS.

AT THE SAME LOCATION 66081 PASSES WITH A TRAIN OF STONE HOPPERS, ANOTHER COMMON TRAFFIC FLOW ON THE LINE. 9.55AM  29/6/11

cement train

THE CEMENT TRAIN MUST HAVE BEEN EXCEPTIONALLY HEAVY FOR IT TO REQUIRE TWO 66's; 66621 IS THE LEAD LOCO. 9.40AM  29/6/11
MODERN

TO ALLOW FOR LARGER CONTAINERS TO RUN ON GOODS TRAINS FROM FELIXTOWE DOCKS, ALL THE BRIDGES ON THE LINE ARE BEING RAISED. THIS IS THE NEW LEICESTER ROAD BRIDGE WHICH WAS SLID INTO PLACE IN APRIL 2011.  24/6/11

modern

THE SCAFFOLDING CARRIES THE FOOTPATH WHILE THE MAIN STRUCTURE IS COMPLETED. BEYOND THE BRIDGE IS MELTON JUNCTION. 24/6/11

MODERN

ALONG THE LINE THE OTHER WAY, A NEW FOOTBRIDGE WAS BUILT IN EARLY 2011 TO CARRY THE FOOTPATH OVER THE FOUR TRACK SECTION. THERE HAS BEEN A LOT OF HOUSING DEVELOPEMNT ON THE RIGHT SO IT IS USED FAR MORE THAN USED TO BE THE CASE.  24/6/11

MODERN

THE FOOTINGS OF THE OLD BRIDGE CAN STILL BE SEEN; THE NEW BRIDGE WAS EFFECTIVELY BUILT ROUND IT BEFORE THE OLD ONE WAS REMOVED. THE NEARER GOODS LINE IS STILL LAID WITH BULLHEAD TRACK.  24/6/11

MODERN

TAKEN FROM THE BRIDGE, A 170 PULLS AWAY FROM MELTON TOWARDS PETERBOROUGH.   24/6/11

MODERN

THE BRIDGE OVER THE RIVER EYE AT THE FORMER BRENTINGBY JUNCTION; A LOT OF WORK HAS BEEN DONE ON FLOOD PREVENTION, WHICH HASN'T DONE MUCH FOR THE LOOK OF THE RIVER HERE.  EWS 66044 CROSSES THE BRIDGE WITH A STONE TRAIN, PROBABLY FROM MOUNTSORREL QUARRY..
